This was it.

On 25 November, 2019 the astoundingly provocative and powerful Sareytales was at the online reins of Micro Galleries for 24 hours as part of our latest micro injection.

GRRRL PARTS is a 24 hour online series of work about violence against women and girls (VAWG) for the U.N International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women, created by Sarey Ruden.

VAWG is one of the most widespread, persistent, and devastating human rights violations in the world. And online platforms have created a new medium for violence, and silencing.

This campaign explores how gender-based violence has seeped into the cyberspace and digital platforms such as dating apps and social media, perpetuating the devastating cycle of rape mentality – and it is an increasingly fine line between real life and digital space.

The sexually violent messages that inspired the art are all real, received from women across the world.

It is our hope that these disturbing statistics, along with the messages paired with the iconic barbie doll – a representation of ideal femininity for the male gaze – will raise awareness of the prevalence and gravity of the situation women face every minute of every day online.

Artist

Detroit-based artist Sarey Ruden’s project Sareytales is a collection of art and designs inspired by the creepy, cruel and misogynistic messages she has received during her online dating journey. Using her art and design background, quirky brand of dark humor plus personal experience and insight, Sarey turns tragic dating app messages into fearless and thought-provoking works of art.
Kat Roma Greer (Australia/Hong Kong)

Urban Disruptor, Curator, MG Artistic Director

Kat is a curator, urban disruptor and creator of public art interventions that focus on positive change. Kat creatively leads the global arts initiative Micro Galleries, is writer and curator for women-identifying initiative, Urban Nasty, is an Advisor for French-based global arts initiative United Sketch Freedom, and was named as one of Australia’s 100 Women of Influence for Culture. She has recently returned from the prestigious The Arctic Circle Residency where she continued her research and activations on climate disruption art and the role of artists in this vital issue.
